PS3 2.4 Firmware Problems

Sony has decided to remove their latest PlayStation 3 firmware from distribution channels. Complaints about the firmware update causing problems prompted the move. At this point it's still fairly unclear how widespread the problems are.

Sony have stated that the problems with it's PS3 firmware, version 2.4, have only affected a small number of customers' machines.

On the Sony PS3 forums users have complained about their consoles freezing up and black screens appearing while attempting to run some games. Some users have claimed their systems have been bricked (rendered completely inoperable). No official statement has been made by Sony as to the cause or potential fixes for the problem.

The latest firmware update included changes to allow users to access the system menu without having to logout of gamplay, in-game messaging support and a touted Google Search feature. Sony also shoehorned an award system into the latest firmware update that is similar in functionality to the system already operating on Microsoft's Xbox 360 console.
